Series background & context

Shadowspell Academy is the coauthored magical-school world from Shannon Mayer and KF Breene. It begins with Wild, a Texas farm girl who receives the worst kind of invitation. Her family has already lost one child to the academy, and now her younger twin brother has been called to attend.

Wild goes in his place.

To pull that off, she cuts her hair, hides her identity, and walks into a school built to break students before it ever teaches them much. The Culling Trials are entrance tests, but that word sounds too polite. Students are kidnapped, tested, hunted, and forced to work out who can be trusted while the rules keep shifting under them.

The first trilogy follows Wild and her misfit allies through those trials. She is trying to survive, keep her disguise intact, and figure out what happened to her brother. The danger is physical, but the bigger threat is the web of adults and factions using students for their own plans.

The Year of the Chameleon books continue the story after the trials. Wild is inside Shadowspell, but that does not mean she is safe. Academy politics, magical secrets, and the consequences of her choices keep pressing in. The school setting gives the series familiar fantasy pieces, but the mood is sharper and more suspicious than cozy.

This entry is useful for readers following Shannon Mayer specifically, since another Shadowspell page may also sit under KF Breene. Start with The Culling Trials, read the first trilogy in order, then move into Year of the Chameleon. Wild’s identity, alliances, and family questions build book by book.
