Wild lives on a struggling Texas farm with her ailing father and younger siblings. When a recruitment letter arrives from a secret academy of magic, it does not feel like an honor. It is a threat. Her older brother died after accepting the same invitation. This time the letter is addressed to her younger twin brother, and it comes with a warning that the entire family will suffer if he does not appear.

Wild reacts the way a big sister who has already buried one brother would. She cuts off her hair, binds her chest, and goes in his place. From the moment she leaves home she is dealing with kidnappers, hostile recruiters, and tests designed to weed out the weak. The Academy does not guarantee its students will survive the entrance exams, let alone graduate.

The Culling Trials trilogy follows Wild through those first brutal tests. She has to keep her disguise intact, learn how this hidden magical society works, and figure out which of her fellow students she can actually trust. Along the way she collects a small team of misfits, each with their own strange talents and secrets. The competitions are dangerous, but the real threat comes from the factions behind the scenes that know far more about her family than she does.

Later books in the world push into Year of the Chameleon, where Wild’s choices in the Trials ripple outward. The authors play with familiar academy tropes, but they tilt them toward survival horror and mystery. Instead of simply earning points for her house, Wild is dodging assassins, uncovering what really happened to her brother, and trying to keep the promises she made on that dusty Texas farm.

Shadowspell Academy is co written by Shannon Mayer and KF Breene, and you can feel both authors on the page. The pacing is quick, the banter is sharp, and the emotional hits land hard when Wild’s mask slips. If you like magical schools but want higher stakes, a scrappy heroine, and a world that is more knife fight than cozy tea time, this series delivers that flavor.
