Series background & context

Leveling Up is KF Breene’s answer to a question that kept bothering her, what if the chosen one is forty, divorced, and wondering what comes next. The series helped kick off the Paranormal Women’s Fiction movement and shows why midlife heroines fit so well in magical stories.

Jessie has just watched her twenty year marriage implode. Her son is leaving for college. The life she built no longer fits, and she has no idea what to put in its place. When an opportunity arrives to caretake an old house in a small Sierra foothills town, it feels like equal parts escape plan and last resort.

The house is not just old. It is Ivy House, a sentient magical estate that has been quietly looking for a new heir. The town is not just quaint. It is packed with gargoyles, shifters, witches, and other beings hiding in plain sight. Jessie walks in expecting to mend a roof and repaint walls. Instead she finds a snarky, cape wearing butler, a bar run by an infuriatingly attractive alpha shifter named Austin, and a destiny she never signed up for.

Magical Midlife Madness starts with Jess trying to put her life back together and slowly realizing the house expects much more from her. Subsequent books, including Magical Midlife Dating, Magical Midlife Invasion, Magical Midlife Love, Magical Midlife Meeting, and Magical Midlife Challenge, follow her as she learns to fly in a very literal sense, assembles a crew of guardians and misfits, and tries to keep her mortal parents from discovering that her quiet new town is anything but.

The tone lands somewhere between sitcom and adventure story. Jess worries about knee pain and reading glasses alongside demon attacks and magical politics. Her friendships with other women in town, her growing crew of gargoyles and shifters, and her prickly slow burn relationship with Austin are just as important as any battle.

What makes Leveling Up stand out is the way it treats age as an asset. Jess brings life experience, boundaries, and a sense of humor you only get by living through things. The books let her be scared and unsure without ever reducing her to a joke. She gets to be the hero, the romantic lead, and the person who decides which risks are worth taking.

If you are looking for a place to start with paranormal women’s fiction or simply want monsters, magic, and second chances in the same series, Leveling Up is built for exactly that.
