Where should I start?
If you want funny fantasy chaos: Trickery → Persuasion → Seduction
If you want darker epic romantasy: A Tempest of Shadows → A City of Whispers → A Dream of Embers
If you want paranormal academy drama: Charcoal Tears → Watercolour Smile → Lead Heart
If you want a modern academy binge: Plier → Tourner → Sauter
Author bio
Jane Washington is an Australian fantasy and romance author who lives in Brisbane. She writes stories that mix danger, longing, strange magic, and heroines who are usually having a much harder week than anyone around them seems to understand.
She likes to say she started writing at two years old. Before she could write the stories down herself, she made them up and had her mother put them on paper for her. Even then, the stories already had a dark streak.
That early habit stuck.
Over time, Washington built a catalogue that moves across fantasy romance, paranormal series, academy settings, fairy-tale retellings, and darker contemporary work. Her books tend to move fast, but they are not light in the simple sense. She likes pressure. She likes power imbalances, dangerous systems, and characters who have to figure themselves out while everything around them is trying to pin them into place.
A lot of readers first meet her through Curse of the Gods, the series she wrote with Jaymin Eve. Those books follow Willa Knight, a chaotic dweller whose life collides with the powerful Abcurse brothers, and they show off one of Washington's favorite combinations, humor, fantasy hierarchy, and real emotional stakes. From there, her solo work opens out in different directions. A Tempest of Shadows goes darker and larger, with war, royal power, and a heroine caught between terrifying men and a failing world.
Then there is Ironside Academy, which turns a gifted school into a social-media spectacle and a prison at the same time. Plier throws Isobel Carter into a ranking system built on attention, power, and survival, and the series only gets harsher from there. Charcoal Tears and Hereditary show an earlier side of her work, packed with paranormal tension, academy politics, and young women trying to survive worlds that already think they know what to do with them.
She also likes taking familiar shapes and twisting them. The Bastan Hollow books turn fairy tales into magical assignments full of rule-breaking and romantic chaos. I Am Grey moves into darker contemporary territory. One Small Echo brings her back to fantasy with bonded monsters, royal control, and a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers thread that begins in a place of real hostility.
Belonging matters a lot in her books. So do hidden power, found family, class and status, and heroines who are underestimated right up until they become impossible to ignore. Even when one series is funny and another is grim, there is usually the same core question underneath it all, what happens when someone pushed to the edge refuses to stay there.
Washington writes about her own life with some humor, too. She has joked about being powered by coffee, moonlight, and anti-social behavior, and she has shared that she lives in Brisbane with her husband and their dog. That mix of intensity and self-awareness feels pretty close to the books.
She keeps finding new ways to make trouble for her characters.
