Series background & context

The Shadowfell trilogy follows Neryn, a fifteen year old girl with a dangerous gift, in the Celtic flavoured land of Alban. King Keldec rules through fear, using masked Enforcers to burn villages, cull anyone touched by magic and drive the Good Folk deep into hiding.

In Shadowfell, Neryn loses her home when her grieving father gambles away the last of their money and their safety. Alone and hunted, she sets out on foot toward a rumoured rebel base called Shadowfell, guided by scraps of stories and the occasional, not always welcome, help of the Good Folk she can see and hear. When a grim, capable fighter named Flint pulls her out of a burning village, she does not know whether he is enemy or ally, yet their paths keep crossing as she travels through wild country and slowly begins to understand that she is a Caller, someone who can summon the Good Folk to act in the human world.

Raven Flight shifts into training and journey mode. The rebel leaders decide that Neryn must seek out four ancient Guardians, each tied to an element and a quarter of the land, to learn how to use her calling without betraying her own ethics. Paired with Tali, a fierce warrior whose loyalty is to the rebels rather than to Neryn personally, she crosses mountains and islands, meeting uncanny beings and learning just how heavy the cost will be if she uses them as weapons. Back at court, Flint walks a knife edge as a double agent close to Keldec, passing on intelligence at great personal risk.

In The Caller, winter closes in and the rebels prepare for one decisive uprising. Neryn must complete her training with the last Guardian and then slip into Keldec's stronghold itself, all while knowing that the king has his own Caller, someone with gifts as strong as hers and no regard for the Good Folk's lives. The story builds toward a final confrontation in which belief, ritual and trust between allies matter just as much as swords.

Across the trilogy, the tone balances hardship and hope. There is plenty of walking in the rain, hard choices and reflection on what it means to ask others to die for a cause, but also pockets of kindness, humour from the more eccentric Good Folk and a quiet, slow growing romance. The result reads like a rebellion ballad stretched into three novels, with a strong heroine who earns every step of her power.
