Series background & context
The Children of the Light Isles books, also known as the Saga of the Light Isles, move north from Ireland to the windswept islands that resemble Viking age Orkney. Here Norse settlers and local Pictish folk share an uneasy peace on rocky shores where storms, longships and old gods are never far away.
The first novel, Wolfskin, follows Eyvind, a farm boy who dreams of becoming a Wolfskin, an elite berserker warrior sworn to the god Thor. Eyvind befriends Somerled, a clever and reserved chieftain's son, and binds himself to that friendship with a blood oath. When Eyvind finally earns his warrior cloak and sails with Somerled to the Light Isles on a voyage of discovery, he meets Nessa, a young priestess charged with guarding the old ways. As Somerled's hunger for power grows, Eyvind is forced to choose between sworn loyalty to his blood brother and the fragile peace he has helped build with Nessa's people.
Foxmask takes place a generation later, when Thorvald, the son of Somerled, discovers the truth about his father's past and is determined to track him down. Sailing with his friend Sam, and accompanied in secret by his childhood companion Creidhe, Thorvald is swept off course to a remote island community ruled by fear, taboo and half understood prophecy. The three young outsiders are caught up in the islanders' struggles and must decide whether to walk away or risk everything to break a cycle of cruelty.
Together, the two books form a duology about the meeting of cultures and the hard work of making and keeping peace. Readers see the Light Isles from both Viking and Pictish points of view, and battles at sea sit alongside scenes of farming, weaving, council meetings and ritual. The stories ask what honour really requires when oaths, love and conscience pull in different directions.
Although the stakes include the future of whole communities, the tone stays grounded in personal choices and relationships. If you enjoy sea journeys, northern landscapes and characters wrestling with faith, leadership and friendship, this is the corner of Marillier's world that explores those questions most directly.
