Series background & context
Shadow Creek Shifters is one of Madison Johns's wilder paranormal romance worlds. The books are set around a Wyoming community where shifters, vampires, and humans keep crossing paths, usually under pressure. These are adult stories with open-door romance, physical danger, and a strong found-family vibe. If the cozy mysteries are about nosy communities, this series is about secret communities trying to survive.
Katlyn starts things at full speed. Katlyn goes out looking for fun, meets Brendan and Chase, and then learns both men are mountain lion shifters just as violence erupts around them. She flees to Wyoming with her friend Tessa, only to discover that Shadow Creek is less a safe haven than a new center of conflict. The outside threat, especially from the Shifter Patrol, keeps the story moving beyond the romance.
Taken expands the world through Katlyn's pregnancy and Tessa's rough transition into vampire life. By Tessa, the focus shifts more fully to that friend group, especially Tessa, werewolf alpha Raphael, and the secretive Seth. Llama and the Lady shows the series can also have fun with its own setup, pairing a llama shifter bodyguard with an actress after a plane crash leaves them stranded in the Wyoming wilderness.
This series does not try to play it safe.
It mixes mates, shifting loyalties, hidden pasts, supernatural politics, and a lot of attraction. Even so, the recurring appeal is community. People come to Shadow Creek wounded, hunted, or hiding something, and the books keep asking whether that place can become home for them anyway.
If you want Madison Johns in a paranormal romance mode that is bolder, stranger, and more openly sensual, Shadow Creek Shifters is a solid place to go. Start with Katlyn if you want the central setup, then follow the books forward as the world widens and the danger gets more personal.
