Author bio
Madison Johns was born in Saginaw, Michigan, and she came to fiction later than a lot of writers do. She has said she started writing at forty-four, while working third shift and trying to stay awake through long nights.
That late start matters.
Before books took over, she worked with senior citizens, and that experience gave her something concrete to write from. Instead of inventing a world she did not know, she built stories around older characters who are funny, stubborn, observant, and much harder to sideline than people assume. That instinct led to Agnes Barton and Eleanor Mason, the senior sleuth duo at the center of Armed and Outrageous.
Johns set Agnes's adventures in the Tawas area of Michigan, a place she loved from childhood vacations, and the lakeshore backdrop became part of the books' personality. Armed and Outrageous later reached the USA Today bestseller list, and the Agnes Barton books helped turn her from an independent author with an idea into a full-time writer with a loyal readership.
Tawas keeps pulling readers back.
She did not stop with one kind of story, either. Johns has written across cozy mystery, paranormal mystery, urban fantasy, romance, and paranormal romance. If you start with Haunted Hijinks, you get Agnes again, but with ghosts in the mix. If you pick up Meows, Magic & Murder, you land in a witchy town with potions, cats, and comic trouble. Up the Creek Without a Poodle leans into pets and small-town mystery, while Curse of the Dragon shifts into urban fantasy with a heroine whose life changes after a violent attack. She also wrote the Kimberly Steele books, including Pretty and Pregnant, which show a softer, more romantic side.
Across all those series, a few things keep returning. Johns likes close-knit communities, everyday people dragged into messy situations, and heroines who keep pushing after everyone else tells them to back off. She also likes stories where the strange part arrives quickly, sometimes it is a ghost, sometimes a magical cat problem, sometimes a rumor that might be Bigfoot, and then the whole town has to deal with it.
She is also a member of Sisters in Crime.
After the success of the Agnes Barton books, Johns was able to write full time from home. In her author bios, she mentions her two children, a black lab, and a Jackson chameleon keeping her company while she works. It is a small, funny detail, but it fits her fiction. Her books often feel lived in, a little chaotic, and full of the kind of side characters who wander in, say something odd, and suddenly matter.
What makes Johns interesting is not that she followed a neat publishing path. She did not. She started later, built much of her career independently, and wrote the kinds of stories she clearly enjoyed. If you come for senior sleuths, witches, pets, shifters, or light romance, you can see the same thread running through the work: she likes lively people, fast-moving trouble, and worlds where nobody stays on the sidelines for long.
