Series background & context
This crossover series brings two very different parts of Madison Johns's fiction together. On one side there is Kimberly Steele, younger, stylish, and trying to build a stable life with Jeremy Preston. On the other side there are Agnes Barton and Eleanor Mason, senior sleuths who do not know how to leave a suspicious situation alone. Put them in the same book, and you get cozy mysteries with a built-in generational clash.
That is exactly what happens in Pretty, Hip, & Dead. Kimberly is newly married when she finds the body of her husband's former girlfriend and quickly becomes the obvious suspect. Jeremy brings in Agnes and Eleanor to help, which gives the story its shape. Kimberly has a direct stake in clearing her name, while Agnes and Eleanor bring experience, nerve, and a talent for barging into places they were not invited.
The later books keep using that contrast well. Pretty, Hip, & Hoodwinked puts Kimberly under pressure when missing bank money points straight at her. Pretty, Hip, & Venomous throws Agnes, Eleanor, and Kimberly together over a poisoned drink at bingo. The cases are local, the suspects are tangled up in everyday grudges, and the fun comes from watching the three women approach trouble from very different angles.
The series has a comfortable Michigan small-town feel, but it is not just another Agnes branch. Kimberly changes the pace. She brings a younger domestic life, new social circles, and problems Agnes and Eleanor would not stumble into on their own. In return, Agnes and Eleanor pull Kimberly into a rougher, more freewheeling version of amateur sleuthing than she would ever choose for herself.
If you like shared worlds and recurring characters meeting in fresh combinations, this series does that nicely. It keeps the cozy structure, but the extra spark comes from seeing who takes charge, who panics, and who keeps talking when maybe nobody should.
