Series background & context

The Sex on the Beach books sound breezy from the title, but Jennifer Probst takes them somewhere more intense than a light vacation fling. This short series is really a two-part relationship story, with the first book setting the fire and the second book dealing with the fallout.

It starts with sun, heat, and bad decisions.

Beyond Me throws its heroine into a spring-break setting in Key West with her closest friends, where she meets a rich, confident man who seems built for trouble. What begins like a sexy escape quickly gets tangled up with lies, ego, and a connection that is much stronger than either person planned for. The beach setting gives the book its color, but the emotional engine is obsession, betrayal, and the shock of realizing a fling can wreck your whole idea of the future.

Then Chasing Me keeps going with the same couple instead of moving to a new one. That matters. This is not a companion-book setup where you can swap protagonists every installment. It is more like one messy romance split into two stages. The second book leans harder into regret, possession, heartbreak, and the question of whether love can survive the damage people do when they are still acting like the worst versions of themselves.

That makes the series feel more angsty than playful. The emotional tone is raw, confessional, and sometimes a little reckless. Probst uses alternating perspectives and high emotional volume to make the relationship feel all-consuming. These are not soft, slow-burn books. They move fast, burn hot, and ask readers to sit with characters who do not always make good choices.

There is still a clear Jennifer Probst through line. She is interested in the difference between lust and honesty, in the ways pride turns into cruelty, and in how hard it can be for two people to tell the truth once attraction has already taken over. Even when the books are dramatic, they are ultimately trying to get at something tender under all the noise.

Because the second book continues the first couple's story, this is a series you really should read in order. If you come in expecting a light beach read, you may be surprised. If you come in wanting sexy contemporary romance with a darker, more emotional edge, this one makes much more sense.
