The Seth Seppi Mystery books follow Seth Seppi, a hardworking boy who begins the series as the kitchen boy at the isolated Last Chance Hotel. He has little power in the Bunn family’s household, and his closest companion is Nightshade, the hotel cat. Seth wants a life beyond the forest and the people who treat him badly, but his chance to leave arrives in the worst possible way.

In The Last Chance Hotel, a dessert Seth has prepared poisons Dr. Thallomius, one of the hotel’s unusual guests. Seth becomes the obvious suspect in a murder investigation, even though he knows he did not commit the crime. The hotel is far from help, the guests all have secrets, and Seth soon realizes that the case is tied to a magical world he did not know existed.

That opening sets the pattern for the series. Seth has a good eye for what does not add up, but he is still learning the rules of sorcery and the risks that come with it. Nightshade is his fierce, funny companion, ready with an opinion and often a sharper instinct than the humans in the room. Together, they follow clues through settings that feel cut off from ordinary life.

In The Bad Luck Lighthouse, Seth is drawn into a MagiCon investigation at Snakesmouth Lighthouse, where strange accidents are being blamed on a haunting. He wants to prove he can be a real detective and a potential sorcerer, but the magic involved is more dangerous than anything he has met before. The isolated lighthouse gives the case a creepy, stormy feeling and leaves a small group of people with plenty to hide.

The Cut-Throat Cafe moves Seth to Gramichee, a town with a large magical community. He hopes an apprenticeship will help him understand and control his own difficult magic. Instead, he finds that apprentices are being attacked. Seth must work out why they are targets while deciding what kind of sorcerer, and what kind of person, he wants to become.

The series builds from a classic closed-circle murder puzzle into a larger story about belonging, responsibility, and dangerous power. Seth is not a polished hero. He makes mistakes, worries about what his magic might do, and often feels out of place among people who know more than he does. That makes his determination to keep investigating easy to root for.

These are fantasy mysteries with genuine danger, but they also have humor, friendship, and satisfying clue work. Begin with The Last Chance Hotel. The later books carry forward Seth’s growing knowledge of magic and his bond with Nightshade, so they are best read in order.
