Series background & context
Serpent Catch is David Farland's science fiction adventure set on Anee, a distant world shaped by Earth's old experiments. Long ago, paleobiologists turned the planet into a living preserve for extinct species. Different continents hold creatures from different eras, so the landscape can shift quickly from familiar human settlements to places filled with predators that should have disappeared from Earth long ago.
Anee is not a safe museum.
For generations, immense sea serpents helped protect Smilodon Bay from the dinosaurs and other dangers coming across the ocean from Hotland. When those serpents vanish, the old balance breaks down. Tyranny, slavery, warfare, and ecological danger all press in at once, making survival a political problem as well as a physical one.
The central character is Tull, the son of a human father and a Neanderthal mother. He begins with little reason to expect an extraordinary life, but the crisis around his homeland pulls him into a dangerous mission. To restore protection for Smilodon Bay, he must travel toward the slave nation of Craal, where young serpents may still be found.
That journey is the spine of the series. Tull has to cross hostile territory, face violent systems of power, and reckon with the fearsome figure known as Adjonai, the Neanderthal god of terror. Along the way, the books explore what it means to be caught between cultures and what ordinary people can do when their home is threatened by forces much larger than themselves.
The current sequence divides material that was originally published in two longer novels into four shorter books: Spirit Walker, Serpent Catch, Blade Kin, and Path of the Crushed Heart. That format lets readers follow the journey in smaller stages, but the story is best treated as one continuous adventure.
Expect rugged science fiction with prehistoric animals, travel, danger, and social conflict. The setting has the scale of planetary adventure, while Tull's need to protect his people keeps the stakes close to home. Start with Spirit Walker and continue in order. Readers who enjoy imaginative ecosystems, survival stories, and heroes pushed into leadership should find a lot to like here.
