Author bio

David Farland was the pen name of John David Wolverton, a writer, teacher, and story coach whose work ranged from big secondary-world fantasy to science fiction, historical fiction, and books for young readers. He was born in Springfield, Oregon, on May 28, 1957, and grew up on a farm near Monroe.

His childhood was busy and practical. He worked young, first as a farm laborer and later in his family's small meat business. But he was also drawn to science, animals, and big questions. As a teenager, he wrote early nonfiction projects about mammals and nuclear weapons, an unusual start for someone who would later build worlds full of magic, monsters, and distant planets.

At Brigham Young University, Wolverton studied medical microbiology while wrestling with another ambition: writing fiction. He began publishing during college, and his first professional steps came through short stories and contests. In 1987, his novella On My Way to Paradise won the Writers of the Future contest. He expanded it into a novel, and writing stopped being a side plan.

He used Dave Wolverton for much of his early science fiction, then adopted David Farland for fantasy. The new name arrived with The Runelords, also published as The Sum of All Men, in 1998.

That series became the center of Farland's fantasy work. Its key idea is both simple and unsettling: people can give away traits such as strength, beauty, memory, sight, and stamina to make another person powerful. Readers who enjoy The Runelords, Brotherhood of the Wolf, and Wizardborn often come for the battles and strange magic, then stay for the moral cost of that power.

Farland also wrote very different kinds of speculative fiction. The Golden Queen sends bodyguard Gallen O'Day into a war that stretches beyond his own world. Serpent Catch follows Tull on the dangerous planet Anee, where extinct creatures, slavery, and political violence shape everyday life. For younger readers, the Ravenspell books, beginning with Of Mice and Magic, mix talking animals, magic, jokes, and fast-moving quests.

He could go quieter, too. Nightingale follows a foster teen who learns he is part of a hidden nonhuman world, while In the Company of Angels fictionalizes the 1856 Willie Handcart Company's hard journey across the American West.

Teaching mattered as much to him as publishing. Farland taught creative writing at Brigham Young University, ran workshops, mentored newer writers, and shared practical advice through classes and books such as Million Dollar Outlines, Writing Wonder, and Write That Novel!. His approach focused on what readers feel, how stories create wonder, and how writers can build stronger scenes one decision at a time.

He also worked in games and film development, bringing the same interest in story structure to other media.

Farland lived in St. George, Utah, with his family. He died there on January 14, 2022, at age 64. His books, lessons, and unfinished story worlds continue to give readers and writers plenty to explore.
