Ravenspell is David Farland's playful middle-grade fantasy series about a boy, a magical mouse, and the hidden world of animal wizards. The books begin with Ben, a lonely child who wants a pet. The Wizard of Ooze brings in Sebaceous Ooze, a worm lord who uses magical song and enslaved mice in a bid to build an army. By Freaky Fly Day, Ben and Amber have already survived major dangers, but an ancient evil called the Ever Shade is becoming a new concern.

The tone is energetic and funny, with puns, chase scenes, magical transformations, and plenty of animal-centered trouble. The stakes are real, but the books keep a sense of fun. A vacation can turn into a crisis. A mouse-sized journey can become a world-saving quest. And Ben's frustration with Amber is part of the joke as well as part of their growing friendship.

Ravenspell works best in order because Ben's transformation and his relationship with Amber are central to the series. Start with Of Mice and Magic, then move to The Wizard of Ooze and Freaky Fly Day. It is a good choice for younger readers who enjoy fantasy adventures with talking animals, oddball villains, and heroes who have to be clever as often as they have to be brave.
