Author bio
Serena Bell writes contemporary romance that likes its people messy, funny, and very human. Before she was publishing love stories, she worked as a journalist, and that background still shows in the way her books pay attention to the little things people say, dodge, and wish they could take back.
She came to fiction through story first, and through romance early.
Bell has said she wrote her first steamy romance before she was old enough to understand every word on the page. Later she stepped away from fiction for a while and spent years reporting on real people, which fits neatly with the way her novels work now. Even at their hottest, they are built around character, conversation, and the awkward choices smart adults make when feelings get involved.
Her early books introduced that mix right away. Yours to Keep, her 2013 novel debut, is a grounded contemporary romance with big emotional stakes. Shorter works like Rescue Me and After Midnight showed another side of her writing too. She can deliver a full emotional arc in a tight space without making it feel rushed.
A lot of readers first lock in with Bell because of how well she handles second chances. In the Returning Home books, including Hold On Tight, Can't Hold Back, and To Have and to Hold, she writes about veterans, old wounds, and people trying to build stable lives after everything has been knocked sideways. The stories are sexy, but they are also interested in recovery, trust, and what it means to come home to yourself as much as to another person.
She is just as comfortable when the mood turns lighter. The Under One Roof books, like Do Over, Head Over Heels, and Sleepover, lean into forced proximity, single-parent chaos, and the comic potential of people who are very much not supposed to fall for each other. Then there is the Oregon coast mood of So Close and So True, and the family-business energy of Make Me Wilder and the Wilder Adventures books, where outdoor guides, wedding planners, bad boys, and city women all get their turn.
In other words, Bell can move from tender to funny to seriously steamy without losing the heart of the story.
That range has earned real recognition. Her books have picked up an RT Reviewers' Choice Award, a RITA finalist spot, an Apple Books Best Book of the Month selection, and an Amazon Best Book of the Year for Romance mention. She is also a USA Today bestselling author, but the more useful thing to know as a reader is this: if you like romance that treats desire and emotional vulnerability with equal respect, you will probably feel at home in her work.
These days, Bell writes from a small office, fueled by chocolate and new ideas. Off the page, she often talks about life with her college-sweetheart husband and their two kids, plus a rotating list of hobbies that currently includes stand-up paddle boarding, board games, meditation, and long walks with friends. That restless curiosity feels very on brand. Her characters are usually trying something brave, or risky, or slightly inconvenient in the name of love, and it is easy to imagine their creator cheering them on.
