Author bio

Serena B Miller was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, and grew up in nearby Minford, in the hills of southern Ohio. Church, family, and storytelling were early parts of her life, and she has said she spent plenty of time sitting in the pews at Sunshine Church of Christ while making up stories in her head.

Writing became serious later. She married a minister, raised three sons, and followed family life through Tennessee, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio. During her years in Michigan she worked as a court reporter in Detroit, which gave her a close look at how people talk under pressure, how facts get sorted out, and how much can hang on a few spoken words.

Then she started making room for fiction.

Before the novels, there were articles and shorter pieces in magazines and Christian periodicals. By the time her sons were older, she was ready to pursue longer work, but the path was not especially smooth. At one writers conference she was told that romance readers would expect scenes she had no interest in writing. Miller kept going anyway and chose to write the kind of stories she wanted on her own shelf, clean, emotionally direct, and grounded in faith.

That choice gave her range. Readers know her for Amish novels, historical fiction, suspense, and cozy mysteries, but the through line is usually the same: ordinary people under strain, communities with strong rules, and love stories that have to work through fear, grief, or old secrets.

A lot of her Amish fiction grew from real friendships. She lives near Amish communities in Ohio and has written about visiting homes, weddings, worship services, and even a one room schoolhouse. Books like The Sugar Haus Inn, An Uncommon Grace, and later A Stranger for Christmas show how much she likes the push and pull between Amish and English worlds, especially when both sides are trying, imperfectly, to do right.

Her historical novels come from a different part of her life. Miller's father was a sawyer, and the stories he told about Michigan's timber era stayed with her. That interest fed directly into The Measure of Katie Calloway, Under a Blackberry Moon, and A Promise to Love, books set in the hard working world of post Civil War lumber camps. The Measure of Katie Calloway won the RITA, and her work has also earned Carol recognition.

Some of her books have traveled well beyond the page. The story first published as Love Finds You in Sugarcreek, Ohio, and later republished as The Sugar Haus Inn, became a television movie. So did An Uncommon Grace and Moriah's Lighthouse. Even when the reach got larger, though, her fiction stayed close to home in feeling, full of inns, farms, cabins, church communities, and people who still have dishes to wash after the drama dies down.

She kept writing through setbacks, too. After her husband died, grief slowed everything down for a while, but family helped pull her back toward the work. That mix of loss, steadiness, and plain old persistence feels very much in step with her books.

These days she lives in the southern Ohio countryside, close to family. Her official bio paints a warm picture, sons, daughters in law, grandchildren, a country house, and a few lazy porch dogs. It fits. Serena B Miller writes stories with big feelings in them, but she never seems to forget the porch, the kitchen, or the long road home.
