1991

Series background & context

Sedikhan is the connected romance world behind many of Iris Johansen's early novels. The fictional Middle Eastern realm links rulers, relatives, and associates whose lives also extend into places such as Houston and private retreats far from the desert. Different couples take the lead, so the books offer a network of relationships rather than one romance stretched across the entire sequence. Wealth, political influence, danger, and a strong desire for independence recur throughout that network.

The central conflicts are personal even when the surroundings are grand.

The Golden Barbarian provides a historical part of the world. Princess Theresa Christina Rubinoff, known as Tess, wants to resist the future arranged for her in Tamrovia. Galen Ben Raschid offers a marriage that would unite their kingdoms, taking her to his palace in Sedikhan. The bargain puts political needs beside private desires. Tess wants freedom, while Galen's enemies and his determination to bind her to him make the relationship far more complicated than a simple escape from her old life.

The contemporary stories bring similar questions into different circumstances. In The Golden Valkyrie, private investigator Honey Winston is hired to steal compromising letters from Prince Rubinoff. When her disguise fails, the prince turns the situation around by making her his bodyguard. An apparent protective assignment keeps the two close, even as attraction gives them reasons to question what each really wants. The story combines a professional mission with a romance neither can manage entirely on their own terms.

The Trustworthy Redhead centers on Alex Ben Raschid and Sabrina Courtney. He is a Houston billionaire and heir to an oil-rich sheikdom; she works to support herself and someone dependent on her care. Their meeting at a party exposes the distance between his expectation of getting what he wants and her need for trust. Sabrina's practical responsibilities prevent the luxurious setting from becoming the whole story. She has obligations that attraction alone won't erase.

In Everlasting, Princess Kira Rubinoff seeks help from international financier Zack Damon. Her careful plans for approaching him at his mountain lodge are unsettled by the connection between them and by secrets he hasn't yet shared. Their journey takes them into danger, making the timing of honesty part of the suspense. This is another version of a concern that links the novels: powerful people may offer help, but accepting that help means discovering how much is being concealed.

The series mixes contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and a historical entry, with overlapping people providing continuity between changing couples. Desert palaces and wealthy estates create dramatic settings, while the characters' wishes keep the focus on freedom, loyalty, and love. Readers can follow the books in publication order to meet the expanding circle gradually. The appeal lies in seeing different relationships take shape within the same world of influence and risk.
