Series background & context

The Beau Lantry/White Satin books bring together three of Iris Johansen's early contemporary romances: White Satin, Blue Velvet, and And the Desert Blooms. Each follows a different couple whose attraction puts pressure on an already complicated life. The settings range from competitive skating to dangerous adventures at sea and a return to Sedikhan. Romance is the focus, with ambition, independence, and the difficulty of trusting another person shaping the conflicts.

The characters have more to protect than their hearts.

In White Satin, Dany Alexander is preparing for the Olympics after years under the guidance of Anthony Malik. A former skating star, Anthony manages her career and has played a major part in her success. Their relationship is changing, however, and the feelings between them no longer fit neatly into the roles of athlete and mentor. Dany wants to understand the man behind his demanding exterior, just as the competition requires her full attention.

The skating setting makes the personal tension especially sharp. Dany's hopes depend on discipline and preparation, but her growing attraction to Anthony asks her to reconsider a relationship that has shaped much of her life. The question isn't simply whether two people want each other. It is whether they can move beyond familiar expectations while the pressure of an approaching Olympics leaves little room for uncertainty or distraction.

Blue Velvet follows Kate Gilbert, who was raised by smugglers and is used to relying on herself. Life at sea has given her freedom, but it has also left her exposed to danger. Beau Lantry enters that world when he helps her out of trouble and risks himself to rescue her friend. Kate feels the pull of a different future with him, yet accepting his help means weighing security and affection against the independence she has fought to keep.

In And the Desert Blooms, Pandora Madchen returns after spending six years away from Sedikhan. She left to discover who she was, traveled, and toured with a rock band. Before leaving, she promised Philip that she would come back. Their reunion now has to account for the experiences and changes of those intervening years. The old attraction matters, but so does the woman Pandora has become while living beyond the place and relationship she once knew.

Together, these stories offer emotional contemporary romance with elements of danger and adventure. The couples face different circumstances, so the series changes direction rather than extending one continuous love story. Readers interested in Johansen's earlier work can follow the books in publication order, moving from the focused pressure of the rink to the open sea and then to a reunion shaped by time apart.
