Series background & context

Secrets & Scandals is an early Darcy Burke historical series, and you can feel her taste for drama all through it. These books are set in the glittering world of Regency London and the English countryside, but the emotional tone is a little darker and more turbulent than in some of her later club- or village-based series.

Everybody has something to hide.

The heroes in these books are often damaged, restless, or carrying the consequences of past choices. The heroines are intelligent, observant, and rarely willing to accept what the men say at face value. That creates romances with plenty of push and pull. Attraction may be immediate, but trust comes slower, especially when crime, false reputations, or genuine scandal are involved.

One of the pleasures of the series is the variety inside that dramatic frame. You get a highwayman, underground fighting, tangled loyalties, and eventually a redemption arc for a character who has badly earned his poor reputation. Burke likes giving people a chance to become more than their worst moment, and this series shows that interest clearly.

The world itself is social and glamorous, but there is real tension under the silk and candlelight. That is why the books still feel lively. A ballroom scene can turn emotionally sharp in a heartbeat, and a country setting is never automatically safe. Readers who enjoy a little more angst in their historical romance often connect well with this series.

Start with Her Wicked Ways and keep going in order through His Wicked Heart, To Seduce a Scoundrel, To Love a Thief, Never Love a Scoundrel, and Scoundrel Ever After. Read together, the books show Burke building a connected Regency world where love has to fight its way through secrets, pride, and scandal before it can settle into anything lasting.
