Series background & context

Secrets of Sugarcreek returns Serena B Miller to the Ohio setting many of her readers already know, but the feel is a little different this time. These books still have Amish country, faith, family ties, and romance, yet the engine is mystery. Not always murder, either. Miller has said she wanted to explore the kinds of secrets people hide in plain sight, the missing person, the troubled stranger, the buried family story, the everyday object with a history attached to it.

The series begins with Amy Stanton, a Manhattan ghostwriter who inherits her ex stepfather's farm and an antique store in Sugarcreek. She arrives expecting to handle the estate and move on. Instead, she finds herself drawn into local life, into the stories tucked away in the property she now owns, and into a complicated connection with Lucas Hershberger, the Amish farm manager who knew the place, and her late stepfather, far better than she did.

That tension is the heart of the series.

Amy and Lucas do not just have chemistry. They have a real barrier between them. She comes from New York publishing and a messy family past. He belongs to an Amish world with clear rules, deep roots, and limits that cannot be waved away for the sake of romance. As the books move from A Stranger for Christmas to Searching for Samuel and The Quiet Soldier, that push and pull remains central. The mysteries matter, but so does the question of whether two people from such different worlds can build anything lasting.

Sugarcreek itself matters in a new way here. In the earlier series, it often felt like a refuge. In this one, it is still beautiful and close knit, but it also has locked rooms, missing people, outsiders asking dangerous questions, and family histories that are not nearly as tidy as they look from the road. The inherited antique store gives the series a nice extra hook, because old objects naturally come with old stories.

The tone lands somewhere between Amish romance, cozy mystery, and quiet suspense. The books are gentler than a crime thriller, but they carry more uncertainty than a straight romance. Miller keeps the stakes personal. A missing husband matters because of the family waiting at home. An injured man matters because everyone in town knows exactly who he is. The danger is never abstract.

If you already like Sugarcreek, this series lets you come back through a darker door. If you are new to Miller, it also works as a clean starting point because Amy is new to the place too. She has to learn the town, the people, and the rules one clue at a time, which makes the reader part of the discovery.
