Series background & context
Sugarcreek Amish Mysteries is a multi author series set in the real life village of Sugarcreek, Ohio, sometimes called the Little Switzerland of Ohio. Nancy Mehl contributes several installments that follow Cheryl Cooper, a former banker who moves from the city to take over her Aunt Mitzi’s Swiss Miss Gift Shop.
Cheryl is an "Englisher" learning to live alongside her Amish neighbors. She moves into her aunt’s cozy cottage, adopts a Siamese cat named Beau, and discovers that even the most picturesque town can be full of questions. Her closest friend is Naomi Miller, an Amish woman who supplies baked goods, jams, and other homemade items for the shop. Together they stumble into mysteries involving missing heirlooms, secret pasts, and crimes that threaten the peace of the community.
In Blessing in Disguise, Cheryl’s transition to Sugarcreek is disrupted when she notices certain items appearing in her inventory that she never ordered. While some suggest she is being anonymously blessed, anonymous warnings tell another story. Cheryl and Naomi must figure out who is behind the gifts and what they are really trying to accomplish.
Simply Vanished finds Cheryl celebrating her birthday and feeling settled when an old laundry chute in the Swiss Miss building reveals clues about a woman who disappeared decades earlier. As she digs into the building’s history, visiting family members and old tensions complicate her search. The mystery forces her to consider how much of the past should be brought into the light.
In All Abuzz at the Honey Bee, strange after hours disturbances at the Honey Bee Cafe lead to rumors of a haunting, just as a rash of bank burglaries shakes local confidence. When money disappears from the Miller family home and odd things keep happening at the cafe, Cheryl and Naomi work to connect the dots before fear damages businesses beyond repair.
Horse Sense and Sensibility raises the stakes when horses across the area, including Cheryl’s own and a prized animal belonging to the Millers, go missing. At the same time, Cheryl finds an old diary that tells of an English woman’s love for an Amish man, a story that strikes close to home. Solving the thefts and making sense of the diary’s bittersweet romance forces Cheryl to face her own feelings for Levi Miller.
Across these books, Nancy Mehl keeps the tone warm and inviting. The mysteries are serious enough to matter but rarely graphic. Daily life in Sugarcreek, from quilting bees and barn raisings to tourists crowding Main Street, provides a vivid backdrop. Faith, friendship, and cross cultural understanding sit at the heart of every story.
