The Secrets and Spies books lean harder into danger than some of Kate Bateman's lighter Regency romances. These stories begin in the shadow of the Napoleonic wars and follow people who live by codes, secrets, and split loyalties. Spies, thieves, counterfeiters, smugglers, and codebreakers all move through the same world, and nobody gets to pretend the political stakes are small.

The setting matters a lot. Paris, London, country estates, hidden routes across Europe, and even a journey into Spain all play a part. War is never just background decoration here. It shapes who has power, who can move safely, who is hunted, and what people are willing to do to protect the few people they love. That gives the romances extra pressure from the start.

The first book, To Steal a Heart, sets the tone with a tightrope-walking circus thief and a French spymaster forced into an uneasy alliance. A Raven's Heart shifts toward coded messages, protective custody, and a trip into real danger after Heloise Hampden's work makes her a target. A Counterfeit Heart turns to forged banknotes, political unrest, and a heroine who has spent years surviving by nerve and invention. Later, Orchids and Mistletoe returns to the same world in a quieter Christmas story, showing that even ex-spies sometimes have to learn how to live again.

What makes the series hang together is the mix of adventure and intimacy. Bateman likes capable people who have been forced into unusual lives, and she gives them partners who can match them in wit, stubbornness, or sheer recklessness. The heroines are rarely sheltered, and the heroes are rarely simple. Many of them have done morally messy things, or have been close to people who did. That keeps the romance lively because trust has to be earned, not just declared.

The tone is sexy, quick, and a little darker around the edges than the Bow Street books. There is still humor and banter, but the danger feels closer. Captivity, surveillance, blackmail, and political violence are part of the landscape. Even so, these are still love stories first. The suspense is there to press the characters together and expose what they would rather hide.

If you want historical romance with real momentum, this series delivers. It is best read in order because the friendships, family links, and ongoing wartime world build from book to book. Expect sharp dialogue, clever women, damaged men, and plots that rarely sit still for long.
