Author bio

S.E. Lynes was born in Runcorn, in northwest England, and grew up in the north. Writing as Susie Lynes, she has become known for psychological thrillers that start close to home: marriages, friendships, children, old secrets, and ordinary people trying to keep life together. Her books are tense, but they are also interested in shame, loneliness, class, and the stories families tell themselves.

Before fiction became her main job, she studied French and Spanish at Leeds University and then moved around a fair bit. After time in London, she went to Aberdeen, where she worked as a producer for BBC Radio Scotland. Later she lived in Rome with her husband and young children. That mix of broadcasting, travel, and family life seems to have fed the sharp eye for voice and behavior that runs through her novels.

Rome was important.

Lynes has said that she began writing seriously there, while her first two children were at nursery. After the birth of her third child and a move back to the UK, she completed an MA in Creative Writing at Kingston University. She then taught creative writing at Richmond Adult Community College for more than a decade. Alongside teaching, she mentored writers and lectured, building her own fiction career step by step rather than in one sudden leap. She wrote several novels before one finally broke through.

That book was Valentina, published in 2016. It takes a new mother, places her in an isolated Scottish setting, and lets friendship turn strange and dangerous. A year later came Mother, a dark family thriller about a lonely young man, a hidden letter, and the kind of secret that can bend a whole life out of shape. The Pact followed with another classic Lynes setup: a child in danger, a mother under pressure, and the past refusing to stay buried.

She is very good at making home feel unsafe.

That runs through books like The Women, about a charming older man whose control grows harder to ignore, Can You See Her?, which asks what happens when a woman feels invisible for too long, and The Housewarming, the novel that became her first Amazon number one bestseller. Readers also tend to come back for books like The Ex and The Baby Shower, where old relationships, female friendships, jealousy, and guilt create the tension long before the final twist lands. The hooks are strong, but the emotional pressure is usually the thing that stays with people.

A lot of Lynes's fiction circles the same bruised places: coercive relationships, motherhood, class anxiety, buried childhood harm, and the gap between how a life looks from the outside and how it feels on the inside. Her settings are often familiar British spaces, houses, suburbs, villages, a party, a street, a room where everyone thinks they know everyone else. That ordinary texture is part of the appeal. The danger rarely arrives from a far-off conspiracy. It starts across the dinner table.

She has also published three children's books in Italy, which is a fun side note if you only know her for dark domestic suspense.

These days she is based in Greater London with her family and works as a full-time author and mentor. If you like psychological thrillers that care as much about people as plot, S.E. Lynes is easy to keep reading, because each book brings a new setup while staying close to the fears and pressures she understands so well.
