A routine armed-robbery arrest should be straightforward, but mentor DCI Ridley warns Jack Warr that suspect Rodney Middleton is far more dangerous than he looks. Judas Horse

by Lynda La Plante

2021

5

Buried

by Lynda La Plante

2020

Young DC Jack Warr is drifting through the Met until a fire at a derelict cottage reveals a charred corpse and the remains of millions in banknotes, tied to the long-ago Widows robbery. Chasing the truth about the money—and his own mysterious parentage—Jack strays dangerously close to the criminals he is hunting.

Series background & context

The DC Jack Warr books introduce a new generation of detective while looping back to one of La Plante’s earliest creations. When the series opens in Buried, Jack is a likeable but directionless young detective constable in the Metropolitan Police, unsure where he fits or what he really wants from the job.

A fire in a derelict cottage changes everything. Inside, investigators find a badly burned corpse and the charred remains of millions in banknotes, traced back to the long‑ago security‑van robbery at the heart of Widows. As Jack follows the money trail, he is forced to examine his own history and the identity of his birth parents, raising the possibility that he may be connected by blood to notorious criminal Harry Rawlins.

The second book, Judas Horse, moves Jack to the countryside, where a ruthless gang is raiding isolated homes. Tasked with flushing them out, Jack uses an inside man as his ‘Judas horse’—bait that will, he hopes, lead the whole herd into a trap. The strategy is risky, and the fallout tests his judgement and loyalties.

In Vanished, an eccentric widow’s fearful claims about a stalker are dismissed by most officers until she is found murdered and her property is linked to an international drugs operation. Jack’s willingness to take her seriously drags him into a case involving art theft, organised crime and a prime suspect who seems to have disappeared.

Later books such as Pure Evil and Crucified push Jack into even murkier territory. He finds himself torn between protecting mentors, pursuing monsters like Rodney Middleton and probing killings that strike disturbingly close to people he cares about. At times he flirts with crossing legal lines in order to get results, forcing him to decide what sort of detective—and what sort of man—he wants to be.

The Jack Warr series feels contemporary in its focus on modern organised crime, corruption and media pressure, but it carries strong echoes of La Plante’s earlier work. Old ledgers, past robberies and the shadow of Dolly Rawlins thread through the books, giving long‑time readers an extra layer while still welcoming new ones who start with Buried.
