Author bio

Scott Mariani grew up in St Andrews on Scotland’s east coast, a place where sea weather, old stones and local legends sit close together. Those early landscapes never really left him, and they still echo through his fiction.

At university he headed south to Oxford, studying Modern Languages and Film Studies. He spent those years reading, watching movies and soaking up stories from across Europe. After graduating he didn’t move straight into publishing. Instead he tried on different lives: translator, professional musician, pistol‑shooting instructor and freelance journalist.

For a while he lived in Italy and France, but eventually he settled in rural west Wales. There, in an old nineteenth‑century country house with surrounding woodland and space to think, he began to focus on writing full time. Out walking in the Welsh countryside he imagined an ex‑SAS soldier carrying a lot of guilt and unfinished business.

That walk gave him Ben Hope.

Ben first appeared in The Alchemist’s Secret, a thriller that mixes a present‑day rescue mission with the hunt for a legendary alchemical manuscript. The book found a large audience, spending weeks at the top of the digital charts and kicking off a long‑running series that has been translated into more than twenty languages.

Across the Ben Hope novels Mariani blends high‑tempo action with puzzles from history: the death of Mozart, lost biblical relics, Nazi secrets, vanished civilizations and modern conspiracies. Ben moves from kidnap rescues to larger global threats, but the stories always circle back to human stakes — loyalty, regret and the cost of violence for someone who knows how to use it too well.

Mariani also steps outside Ben’s world. In the Vampire Federation books he built a modern vampire society with its own governing council and intelligence agency, following agent Alex Bishop and detective Joel Solomon as an old‑school uprising tears at the rules that keep humans and vampires apart. With The Cage he introduced DI Tom McAllister, an Oxfordshire detective drawn into a controversial vigilante case. More recently, the Will Bowman novels have taken him back to the Third Crusade, following an ordinary Englishman who joins King Richard’s army and slowly becomes a knight.

He has also written How to Write a Thriller, a down‑to‑earth guide aimed at new and aspiring authors. It distils what he has learned about structure, pacing and character from years spent writing fast‑moving stories for a wide readership.

Away from the desk Mariani has talked about his love of shooting and archery, photography, jazz, astronomy and long walks in the countryside. He’s a supporter of conservation causes, and he tends to describe the places he loves more readily than he talks about awards or sales figures.

He still lives and writes in west Wales, using that quiet base to send his characters across Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Each new book finds a different corner of history or a fresh moral knot to explore, but the aim stays simple: to tell a good story that keeps readers turning the pages.
