Series background & context
The Scope series represents a distinct shift in gear for Simon Kernick. While his earlier novels established him as a master of the British police procedural, this specific run of books—comprising Siege, Ultimatum, and Stay Alive—doubles down on the concept of immediate, catastrophic danger. These aren't stories about detectives quietly dusting for fingerprints days after a crime has been committed. They are about ordinary people and first responders realizing that a normal afternoon has just turned into a violent fight for survival.
The series kicks off with Siege, which establishes the high-stakes template perfectly. The action is largely confined to the Stanhope, a luxury hotel on London’s Park Lane. When gunmen take over the building, the narrative splits between the terrified hostages inside and the police trying to formulate a desperate rescue plan from the street. It’s a classic locked-room scenario, but played out with automatic weapons and a ruthless antagonist known as "The Liberator." The tension here relies heavily on claustrophobia. You are trapped in the corridors with the danger, and help feels a million miles away.
Things escalate significantly in the second installment, Ultimatum.
Here, the threat moves from a single building to the city streets. A terrorist bomb attack in London creates a chaotic backdrop for a story that blends a manhunt with a city-wide panic. The focus remains on the "ticking clock" element that Kernick is famous for, often compressing the timeline so the entire novel takes place over just a few terrifying hours. This creates a breathless reading experience where the characters rarely get a moment to sit down, let alone sleep.
The trilogy concludes with Stay Alive, which strips away the urban environment entirely.
Moving the action to the rugged landscape of the Scottish Highlands, the story turns into a brutal game of cat and mouse. It follows a survivor from the previous events who is now being hunted through the wilderness. This entry leans closer to a survival horror thriller than a standard crime novel. The technology and backup that usually protect the characters are gone, leaving them to rely on their wits and endurance.
Throughout the series, the connecting tissue is often provided by characters like Detective Chief Inspector Mike Bolt. However, the true star of these books is the pacing.
Kernick writes these stories with a focus on adrenaline rather than mystery. While there are certainly plot twists and hidden motives, the driving force is always the immediate physical threat. It’s less about "whodunit" and more about who is going to make it out of the building alive. By moving the camera away from the procedure of the investigation and pointing it directly at the chaos of the event, the Scope series offers a grittier, more intense look at modern crime.
