Series background & context

Simon Kernick has a knack for creating characters who live on the edge, but this series takes that concept and doubles down. By bringing together DI Ray Mason and Tina Boyd, the books offer a collision of two distinct, volatile worlds. It isn’t just a team-up; it is a pairing of two people who are arguably too dangerous to work together, yet they are exactly what the situation demands.

Ray Mason is introduced as a cop with a serious reputation. He is effective, certainly, but he carries a shadowy past that makes his colleagues in the Met uncomfortable. He operates with a level of ruthlessness that often blurs the line between the law and the criminals he hunts. He is the kind of detective you want on your side when things go wrong, even if you wouldn’t invite him over for dinner.

He is a weapon of last resort.

On the other side of the equation is Tina Boyd. Longtime readers will recognize her from her own earlier adventures in the Kernick universe. She is no longer constrained by police procedure. As a private investigator, she has the freedom to kick down doors that would otherwise remain shut. She is driven by a deep-seated need for justice that often borders on obsession.

When you put Mason and Boyd in the same room, sparks fly. They don’t necessarily like each other, but they recognize a shared intensity. They are both willing to ignore the rulebook if it means stopping a killer. This makes their partnership incredibly effective, but also incredibly risky. They feed off each other’s reckless energy, creating a momentum that drives the series forward.

The narrative arc, beginning with The Bone Field, focuses heavily on cold cases that refuse to stay frozen. The stories are usually triggered when the past comes crashing into the present—whether it is the sudden discovery of buried remains in a remote location or a new piece of testimony that blows a decades-old cover-up wide open. These aren’t simple murder mysteries. They are deep dives into corruption where the villains are often powerful figures who have spent years thinking they got away with it.

Kernick maintains his trademark pace throughout the series. While the mysteries are rooted in history, the action is very much in the now. The investigations move at a blistering speed, often forcing Ray and Tina to fight for their lives as they get closer to the truth. It is gritty, unpolished, and morally complex, offering a darker look at the price of justice.
