Series background & context

Dennis Milne stands out as one of the most morally complex figures in modern British crime fiction. To the outside world and his colleagues at the Metropolitan Police, he appears to be a cynical but effective Detective Sergeant. He knows the streets, understands how the game is played, and generally gets results. But there is a shadow side to his life that would terrify even the hardened villains he arrests. When the badge comes off, Milne operates as a professional hitman.

He doesn’t view himself as a monster. In his own twisted logic, he is simply taking out the garbage. He targets the people who truly deserve it—the murderers, rapists, and untouchable gangsters who have managed to slip through the fingers of the justice system. It is a grim, violent pragmatism. If the courts are too weak to do the job, Milne steps in to finish it. He views his extra-judicial activities as a necessary public service.

Of course, playing both sides of the law is a dangerous game, and the balance cannot hold forever.

The situation explodes in the debut novel, The Business of Dying. Milne accepts a contract that looks like standard procedure, only to find himself the victim of a catastrophic setup. The targets were not the criminals he was told they were, and he is suddenly framed for a high-profile crime. He didn't do this specific crime, but his guilt in other areas makes it impossible to defend himself legally.

The hunter instantly becomes the hunted.

This betrayal launches a desperate narrative arc that spans the entire series. Milne is forced to flee the United Kingdom to escape a life sentence, trading the gray, rain-slicked streets of London for the stifling, humid heat of the Philippines in A Good Day to Die. He tries to disappear and live a quiet life in exile, but Simon Kernick rarely lets his characters rest. The past has a way of catching up, and the burning need for revenge—and survival—eventually drags him back to British soil in The Payback.

What makes these books so gripping is the uncomfortable position they put the reader in. You really shouldn't root for Dennis Milne. He is a cold-blooded killer who takes money to end human lives. He is brutal, often unrepentant, and incredibly violent. Yet, you find yourself on his side.

Compared to the deep-seated corruption and true evil he fights against, Milne’s personal code of honor feels almost noble.

Fans of Kernick’s wider work will also appreciate how this narrative weaves into his larger universe. Milne inhabits the same gritty reality as other series regulars, including the tough-as-nails Tina Boyd. Watching these storylines overlap adds a rich layer of texture to the reading experience. It is a relentless, high-octane journey through a world where the line between the good guys and the bad guys isn't just blurred—it’s completely erased.
