Sasscer Hill Books in Order

Sasscer Hill was born in Washington, D.C., and grew up with one foot in the city and the other in Maryland horse country. She has written that she was horse-mad almost from the start, galloping around with a stick horse as a child and sneaking rides on the farm's Belgian plow horses before anyone thought that was a sensible plan.

Those early years shaped nearly everything that came later. Hill has credited two older mentors in particular, horsewoman and pioneering racing columnist Rhoda Christmas Bowling, and steeplechase owner Alfred H. Smith Sr., with helping turn a stubborn kid's obsession into a real life in the saddle. Foxhunting, racing, and long days around barns gave her not just material, but a way of seeing the world.

She studied English literature at Franklin and Marshall College, graduating with honors. After college, writing did not arrive in one clean leap. She spent about twenty years working in marketing and promotions for Washington, D.C. associations and academic publishers, while still keeping horses at the center of her life.

Horses kept winning.

With her husband, Daniel Filippelli, Hill bred, raised, and sold thoroughbreds in Maryland for roughly three decades. She also rode in fox hunts for many years and won over timber fences at the 1986 Potomac Hunt Races. That background gives her fiction its lived-in feel, the tack, the feed tubs, the backstretch politics, and the mix of grit, hope, and danger that comes with chasing a fast horse.

Writing came later, but once it did, it stuck.

Hill's path to publication was not especially tidy. She started a romantic suspense novel while still working, finished it, and saw it rejected. Instead of quitting, she took classes at the Bethesda Writer's Center, learned the craft more seriously, and wrote Full Mortality. That book introduced jockey Nikki Latrelle and went on to earn Agatha and Macavity nominations for best first mystery.

From there, Hill built a body of work that keeps returning to people under pressure. The Nikki Latrelle books, including Racing From Death, The Sea Horse Trade, and Shooting Star, drop readers into the hard corners of American horse racing, where betting scams, drugs, cruelty, and murder sit just outside the winner's circle. Her Fia McKee novels, Flamingo Road and The Dark Side of Town, follow a tougher, older heroine working undercover in the same world. Flamingo Road won the Dr. Tony Ryan Award for best book in racing literature, and The Dark Side of Town picked up a starred review and more award attention.

Hill does not only write about racetracks. In Travels of Quinn, she moved into Southern crime and the closed world of Irish American Travelers, while Murder at the Willcotts Hotel shows her lighter Janet Simpson side, with a wealthy widow, a racehorse, and trouble close behind. Across the books, certain things repeat. Women who are underestimated. Horses that matter as more than scenery. Vulnerable people who need help. And bad actors who assume money, charm, or power will cover their tracks.

She now lives in Aiken, South Carolina, with her husband, where horse country still feels close at hand. That seems about right. Hill came to fiction after years of real barns, real work, and real risk, and that practical knowledge is a big part of why her mysteries feel grounded even when the plots start to gallop.
