Even at its coziest, this series does not forget the horses. Hill keeps the racing background active, not decorative. Janet may be wealthier and less physically reckless than Nikki Latrelle or Fia McKee, but she still moves through barns, tracks, and the social world that grows up around them. She also has a habit of standing up for people who have less power than she does, whether that means a gullible friend, a young groom, or a family member who has wandered too close to the wrong person.

The tone is a nice balance. These stories are shorter and more approachable than Hill's hardest-edged thrillers, and Janet herself brings humor and a bit of late-blooming confidence to the page.
