Author bio

Samuel Marquis was born and raised in Denver, Colorado, where an early love of history, sports, and the outdoors took hold. He attended Bromwell and Graland Country Day School before heading to Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs. It was at Fountain Valley that he wrote his first novel, an early attempt he later described with good humor.

Writing was there from the start, but so was science. At Denison University, Marquis co-founded the Denison Journal of Geosciences and earned a geology degree. He later received a master's degree in geology from Southern Methodist University, building the technical background that would become a big part of his fiction.

He has spent much of his working life as a professional hydrogeologist.

Marquis has worked in environmental consulting, including groundwater contamination work, environmental risk assessments, and expert-witness cases. That experience gave him a practical understanding of what happens when scientific evidence, large companies, public safety, and the legal system collide. It also gave him plenty of material for suspense stories that feel rooted in real-world problems.

That connection is clearest in the Joe Higheagle novels. In Blind Thrust, a Cheyenne geologist investigates suspicious earthquakes linked to an energy company. Cluster of Lies follows a possible childhood cancer cluster outside Denver. Both books bring environmental questions into the foreground while keeping the focus on investigators facing powerful people with much to lose.

His interests range well beyond modern Colorado. The Nick Lassiter-Skyler books move into contemporary political conspiracies, assassins, intelligence work, and international secrets. The World War II novels, including Bodyguard of Deception, Altar of Resistance, Spies of the Midnight Sun, Lions of the Desert, and Soldiers of Freedom, use separate casts and settings to explore espionage, resistance, military campaigns, and the human cost of war.

History is the thread that ties much of it together.

Marquis has long been drawn to the Plains Indian Wars, World War II, colonial America, and the Golden Age of Piracy. He is the ninth-great-grandson of Captain William Kidd, a family connection that helped inspire his historical work. In Blackbeard: The Birth of America, he revisits the man behind the pirate legend. In Captain Kidd: A True Story of Treasure and Betrayal, he examines Kidd's career, trial, and long-lasting reputation through a research-heavy narrative.

His books often combine documented history or technical research with fast-moving plots. Readers who enjoy details about intelligence operations, military strategy, geology, or early American life will find those subjects woven directly into the stories rather than left in the background. His work has received recognition from several national book-award programs, but the through line is simpler: he likes digging into complicated material and making it readable.

Marquis lives in Louisville, Colorado, with his wife. They raised three children there. When he is away from his geology work and writing desk, he enjoys hiking, skiing, lacrosse, and live music.
