Author bio
Barbara Samuel grew up in Colorado Springs, and she has been making stories for a very long time. In one interview she said she was telling stories to her sisters before she could even read. By about eleven, once it clicked that books were written by real people, she decided that was the job she wanted.
She knew early.
Before publishing took over her life, she worked in restaurants for years. She has talked about falling in love with food and restaurant life as a teenager, then spending more than a decade in places that ranged from cafés and dives to fine dining. That stretch shows up all through her fiction, where meals are never just decoration and kitchens often feel like places where people tell the truth.
She started publishing contemporary romance as Ruth Wind, selling Strangers on a Train right out of college. Later she wrote historical romance as Barbara Samuel, then moved into women's fiction under Barbara Samuel and Barbara O'Neal. Across those names, the through line is pretty easy to spot: strong women, complicated families, longing, second chances, and people trying to build a life that finally fits.
Food keeps showing up for a reason.
Readers who come to her through The Lost Recipe for Happiness or How to Bake a Perfect Life usually stay for the mix of heart, appetite, and hard-earned hope. When We Believed in Mermaids brought her to a much bigger audience with its story of sisters, buried trauma, and a search that stretches all the way to New Zealand. The Art of Inheriting Secrets leans into family mystery and an inherited English estate, while older books like A Bed of Spices show how comfortable she is in the deep emotional pull of historical romance.
Her books tend to return to a few favorite elements. There are sisters and daughters, women starting over, men carrying wounds they don't quite know how to name, and settings that matter as much as the people do, Colorado, New Mexico, California, England, the Oregon coast. Dogs appear a lot. So does travel. So does the idea that the past is never as finished as people wish it were.
The awards came, too, but they didn't arrive in place of the work. She has won seven RITA Awards, and in 2012 she was inducted into the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame. Her novels have also reached readers well outside the United States through many international editions.
These days, she lives on the Oregon coast with her British husband, along with cats and dogs, and writes with the sea nearby. She still comes back, on the page at least, to Colorado and the Southwest again and again. That feels right for a writer whose work is so often about home, even when her characters have to travel a long way before they recognize it.
And that may be the simplest way to describe Barbara Samuel. However far she wanders in genre, place, or pen name, she keeps writing toward connection, toward healing, and toward the small stubborn hope that people can begin again.
