Author bio

Samantha Hayes grew up in the West Midlands in a family that gave her two very different worlds. During the week she was around artists, paint, noise, and not much money. At weekends she spent time with her businessman father, and that contrast seems to have fed the sharp eye for family tension that runs through her fiction.

Writing started early.

As a child she made little books for friends and asked for a typewriter when she was ten. She wrote horror stories, romances, fantasy, and mystery adventures, long before publication felt remotely possible. She also left school at sixteen, skipped university, and learned pretty quickly that real life can be stranger than any writing lesson.

Before books became her full-time path, Hayes worked all over the place. She has been a private investigator, barmaid, car cleaner, fruit picker, factory night-shift worker, accounts clerk, nursery nurse, and waitress. She even learned to fly a plane before she learned to drive, which tells you something about her taste for unusual detours.

Travel mattered too. She lived on the Isle of Man for a few years, spent time on a kibbutz, and later lived in both Australia and the United States. Between the early 1990s and the late 1990s she had three children, and she eventually settled back in Warwickshire, where she still lives.

Her break came when she won a short story competition in 2003. The early novels appeared under the name Sam Hayes, including Blood Ties, Unspoken, Tell Tale, and Someone Else's Son. Later she published as Samantha Hayes and reached a wider audience with books like Until You're Mine, Date Night, The Ex-Husband, and The Marriage Rules.

What readers tend to like about Hayes is how ordinary life never stays ordinary for long. Her stories often begin with a family home, a marriage, a missing child, a troubling message, or a knock at the door. Then she starts tightening the screws. The danger usually feels close to home, and the emotional fallout matters just as much as the twist.

That mix shows up clearly in the DI Lorraine Fisher novels, starting with Until You're Mine, and in the later standalones that lean into domestic suspense. There are detectives, missing people, manipulative partners, buried secrets, and parents trying to keep control when everything is starting to slide. Even when the setup is big, Hayes writes it in a way that feels personal.

She likes to ask a simple, nasty question: what if this happened to me or my family?

These days Hayes has written more than twenty thrillers, and her books have been published in multiple languages. Away from the page, she has said she enjoys painting watercolours, going to the gym, and swimming. She still lives in Warwickshire, and there is a nice sense, across her work and her own accounts of her life, that she never lost the urge that first got her started, to turn messy, everyday fears into stories you want to race through.
