Author bio
Drew Hayes is an author from Texas who built his career in the very Drew Hayes way: by writing a lot, joking about how odd the whole process is, and steadily turning web readers into book readers.
He graduated from Texas Tech with a B.A. in English. His own author bio makes fun of that choice, which tells you a fair bit about his public voice. Hayes tends to write with one foot in genre adventure and the other in a joke that lands because the characters still matter.
The web was his first big workshop.
Before many readers found him through ebooks or audiobooks, Hayes was posting long-form fiction online. Super Powereds grew out of that serial approach, following would-be heroes through college, training, secrets, and a world that does not always know what to do with people who have power. It is big, patient, and full of friendships that get tested over time.
From there, Hayes kept moving sideways into new corners of speculative fiction. NPCs starts with a tabletop fantasy joke, then turns the non-player characters into the heroes of their own dangerous quest. The Utterly Uninteresting and Unadventurous Tales of Fred, the Vampire Accountant does something similar with urban fantasy, asking what happens when the undead guy in the room would rather file tax paperwork than brood in a castle.
That mix is a Hayes staple: weird premise first, practical consequences immediately after.
His other series keep playing with genre rules. Forging Hephaestus looks at superheroes from the villain side, with guild rules, secret identities, and a young inventor trying to survive her apprenticeship. The Case of the Damaged Detective turns Sherlock Holmes into a road-trip mystery and buddy comedy. Roverpowered goes gentler, following an aspiring alchemist and her very unusual dog familiar through a progression fantasy built around training, loyalty, and discovery.
Readers often come to Hayes for the funny setup, then stay because he gives the joke room to become a story. His books like found families, underdogs, reluctant leaders, rule systems, and people who are far more competent than they look. Accountants, side characters, junior villains, college students, and small dogs all get their turn.
Hayes has also written nonfiction in Underqualified Advice, where he talks about writing, publishing, and the many mistakes that teach a working author how to stay afloat. It fits the rest of his career: direct, self-aware, and more useful than the title wants you to expect.
He continues to live and write in Texas.
