The Andy Hayes Mysteries are hard-boiled private-eye stories set in and around Columbus, Ohio. Their lead is Andy Hayes, a former Ohio State and Cleveland Browns quarterback who has traded a public sports career for the less glamorous work of a private investigator. The series begins with Fourth Down and Out, when Andy is hired to recover a laptop and finds himself pulled back toward Ohio State and his own worst memories. Later books take him through an arson case in Slow Burn, a killing at the Ohio Statehouse in Capitol Punishment, and a race to find a missing woman in The Hunt. The Third Brother, Fatal Judgment, and An Empty Grave widen the scope with cases involving a missing teenager, a vanished judge, and a decades-old burglary.

The more recent books bring the stakes close to home. In Sick to Death, Andy learns he has an adult daughter and is asked to investigate her mother’s death. Rescue Me puts him in the role of bodyguard for a threatened drag performer. Readers can pick up most entries on their own, but starting at the beginning lets Andy’s hard-won changes land with more weight.

Expect sharp, grounded mysteries with a weary but decent investigator at the center. The crimes can be serious, but Andy’s dry outlook and the lived-in Columbus setting keep the books moving.
