Series background & context

The Sam Casey Mystery series centers on Samantha, or Sam, Casey, a detective in the Chicago-area suburb of Chasen Heights. Sam knows police procedure, follows evidence, and can handle herself in a difficult investigation. She also has an ability that makes every case more complicated: the dead can speak to her.

Sam's gift often comes through contact with a victim or an object connected to a crime. A flash of memory, a voice, or a feeling can point her toward a truth that the living have hidden. It is never a simple shortcut. The clues can be frightening, incomplete, and hard to explain to colleagues who rely on facts that can be written in a report.

Her Native American family heritage is an important part of how Sam understands this side of her life. The series also follows her relationship with Detective Jake Mitchell, whose more conventional approach creates both friction and balance. Their shared cases make room for police work, family pressure, and the practical problem of trusting what cannot be proved.

The first book, When the Dead Speak, begins with the discovery of a Korean War soldier's body inside a concrete pillar. Sam's investigation links the man's death to an old secret and to questions surrounding her own father. Nothing Else Matters moves the action to a riverboat casino, while Restless Spirit sends Sam after evidence that a man on death row may have been convicted of the wrong murder.

The past is rarely finished here.

As the series continues, Sam takes on work as an investigative consultant, but crime keeps pulling her back into dangerous places. In Echoes from the Grave, bones uncovered at a construction site include a much more recent murder victim. What Lies Within turns on a hidden room and an old disappearance, Destiny Kills examines deaths that appear to be suicides, and The Tunnel brings a homeless child and an abandoned building into a case that becomes personal for Sam.

These books are paranormal police mysteries with a Midwestern setting and a steady interest in buried history. They work best in order because Sam's family life, her bond with Jake, and the cost of her abilities all develop across the series. Begin with When the Dead Speak to meet Sam before the cases and relationships grow more tangled.
