Series background & context
Mark of the Thief is a middle grade fantasy adventure set in a version of ancient Rome where the old gods' magic still has teeth. The series begins with Nicolas Calva, usually called Nic, an enslaved boy working in the mines outside Rome. He wants freedom, safety for his family, and a life that belongs to him.
Instead, he finds Julius Caesar's lost treasure.
In Mark of the Thief, Nic is forced into a sealed cavern and discovers a magical bulla, an amulet connected to Caesar and to power that many people in Rome would kill to control. Once that magic is tied to him, Nic becomes useful to all the wrong people. Senators, soldiers, secret factions, and enemies of the empire all begin closing in.
The setting gives the trilogy much of its energy. Rome is full of public spectacle, private conspiracy, and brutal social rules. Freedom is never an abstract idea for Nic. It is tied to chains, family separation, dangerous masters, and the knowledge that powerful people can rewrite a life with one order.
Across Mark of the Thief, Rise of the Wolf, and Wrath of the Storm, the Praetor War grows around Nic. The magical objects become more important, the threats become more dangerous, and Nic has to decide how much power he can use before that power starts using him.
This series is a strong fit for readers who like fast action, historical flavor, and magic with a cost. Nielsen includes chariot racing, beasts, betrayals, Roman politics, and plenty of narrow escapes, but Nic's personal fight stays clear. He is trying to save the people he loves without becoming a weapon for someone else's war.
Read the books in order. Each one builds on Nic's changing powers, his alliances, and the larger conflict over Rome's future.
