Sally MacKenzie grew up in Washington, D.C., and she still lives in suburban Maryland, not far from her childhood home. Long before she published a novel, she knew stories could get a room's attention.
In grade school, she read one of her own stories aloud to her class. The other kids laughed, and she was hooked.
Fiction still took the long way around. She studied English at the University of Notre Dame and graduated in the first class of women. Then she went to Cornell Law School, only to realize partway through that she did not want to spend her life as a lawyer.
That was the first big turn.
Back in the Washington area, she wrote for a living, but not the kind of writing she had imagined as a child. She worked on federal regulations for the government's school nutrition programs, then married her law school sweetheart and stepped back to raise their family. She and her husband had four sons, and like a lot of parents, she became very good at schedules, rides, school projects, and doing six things at once.
She kept writing anyway. Some of it was practical, newsletters, class plays, auction programs, and swim league guides. Some of it was private, stories and picture book drafts tucked away while family life took the front seat. When her oldest son left for college, she finally gave herself room to try the thing she had wanted for years, romance fiction.
She joined Romance Writers of America, polished a manuscript, and entered The Naked Duke in the 2004 Golden Heart contest. The book made the final round, caught an editor's eye, and became her debut novel. It was a fitting start, because MacKenzie has a knack for taking a ludicrous setup, a compromised bedchamber, a matchmaking disaster, a nobleman with no clothes, and turning it into something warm, funny, and surprisingly tender.
From there, she was off.
After that, the books kept coming. The Naked Duke launched the interconnected Naked Nobility stories, and later titles like The Naked King helped show how much readers liked her mix of wit, steam, and family chaos. Bedding Lord Ned opened the Duchess of Love books, which center on a formidable matchmaking mother and her sons. With What to Do with a Duke and When to Engage an Earl, she moved into the village world of Spinster House, where women want independence just as much as romance. Then What Ales the Earl brought in breweries, second chances, and a strong thread of female friendship.
Her books are usually set in Regency England, but the real through line is character. She likes practical heroines, widows, spinsters, outsiders, and women who know their own minds even when society would prefer they did not. Her heroes may be dukes, earls, marquesses, and viscounts, but they rarely glide through life. They are often grieving, stubborn, suspicious, overconfident, or simply a little foolish. In books like Surprising Lord Jack and Cheers to the Duke, the comedy never quite pushes out the deeper stuff, old hurt, loyalty, and the work of building a life.
The success is easy to see in plain facts. She is a USA Today bestselling author. The Duchess of Love was a RITA finalist, and What Ales the Earl was also a RITA finalist. The Naked King and Bedding Lord Ned were later included on ALA Booklist's roundup of standout romance novels from the previous decade.
These days, when she is not writing, MacKenzie still seems drawn to motion. She swims with a Masters group, travels to England for research, and likes wandering historic sites and the countryside with her husband. She has also said he sometimes gets drafted into looking at old spoons in the name of book research. It is a nice match for a writer whose novels keep one foot in careful Regency detail and the other in comic human mess.
