Series background & context

Mackenzie Cove is Edie James at her coastal, family-centered best. The series is set in a small beach town where everybody knows the MacKenzie clan, and where that kind of closeness can be both a safety net and a problem. These books mix clean romance, danger, and a lot of local history.

The MacKenzies are not just a big family. They are woven into how the town works. A police chief, a harbor patrol officer, a firefighter, a Coast Guard pilot, a psychologist, and a lawyer all sit close to the center of the action, which means the cases in these books never feel far from home. When trouble hits Mackenzie Cove, it lands in kitchens, on docks, in patrol cars, and at family tables.

That matters.

Each book follows a different lead couple, but the series keeps its balance by returning to the same town, the same family, and the same long shadow of old secrets. Rising Storm opens with Rollo MacKenzie coming home to take over as police chief just as his first love becomes the target of a killer. Rising Seas shifts to psychologist Viv MacKenzie and a detective hiding from dirty cops. Rising Wind brings in Teo MacKenzie and Dr. Kendall Rodriguez, whose discovery about a new drug turns deadly.

Later books widen the town's emotional map. Rising Fury pairs firefighter Dante MacKenzie with Rachel Scott, a woman haunted by the worst night of her life. Rising Hope adds espionage to the mix when Enzo MacKenzie goes undercover in his own hometown. Rising Faith pulls on an old family wound as Emmie MacKenzie and Skeet Archer dig into the truth about her mother's death. So even though every book has a self-contained romance and mystery, there is also a larger pleasure in watching the family story deepen.

The tone sits in a sweet spot. These are suspense novels, so there are killers, cover-ups, and people willing to do real harm. But they are also neighborly books. The beach town setting matters, not just because it looks good, but because it creates a feeling of routine life constantly brushing up against danger. Faith and renewal run through the series, and James writes both without slowing the pace.

If you like romantic suspense with strong family ties, first responder energy, and a town that keeps its history close, Mackenzie Cove is easy to settle into. The books work best in order, because every return to town makes the stakes feel a little more personal.
