Series background & context

The Rylan Flynn Mystery series follows Rylan Flynn, a young woman who sees ghosts and tries to help restless spirits move on. For Rylan, hauntings are not a hobby or a spooky story. The dead often come to her because something about their lives, or their deaths, still needs to be understood.

Her work regularly puts her near murder scenes. A ghost may lead Rylan to a body, appear in a house with a dangerous history, or leave behind fragments of a clue that only she can notice. That makes her valuable in an investigation, but it also makes her easy for skeptics to dismiss and puts her in real danger when killers realize she knows too much.

Rylan cannot leave the dead alone.

The Spirit Girls starts the series when the ghost of a young woman leads Rylan into the woods and to her own murdered body. The case brings Rylan into conflict with Detective Ford Pierce, who does not welcome her involvement. As more evidence points toward Rylan's family, she has to clear their name while trying to stop a killer from claiming another victim.

Ford becomes an important part of the series. He is a detective who wants evidence and procedure, while Rylan has information that cannot always be explained in a report. Their uneasy working relationship gradually becomes more personal, though the cases and their own pasts make it difficult for either of them to trust easily.

Ashby, Rylan's small town, is full of places where the past feels close: woods, old churches, camps, bridges, mansions, and houses with locked rooms. In The Shadow Girls, Rylan is the last person to see a missing woman before she vanishes. The Whisper House takes her to an ex-boyfriend's haunted mansion, where a dying woman and the kidnapping of Rylan's best friend raise the stakes. The later books continue to mix separate cases with a larger threat gathering around Ashby.

Rylan has her own unfinished history, too. Her mother's ghost remains near her, tied to a murder from years earlier. Across the series, that loss, a troubling evil presence, and Rylan's struggle to let people close give the stories an emotional thread beyond the crime of the moment.

The tone is fast, eerie, and character-focused. There are ghosts and paranormal danger, but the mysteries are grounded in missing people, murder, family secrets, and people who have learned to hide terrible things. Romance develops slowly alongside the investigations, rather than taking over the plot.

Start with The Spirit Girls. Each book has a central mystery, but the strongest experience comes from reading in order, beginning with Rylan's first case and continuing through The Last Haunting. That path lets readers see Rylan's relationships, confidence, and long-running personal questions change as the supernatural danger grows.
