Series background & context

The Maddison, Indiana Supernatural Thriller series is a set of dark, connected stories set in and around a small Indiana town. Each book centers on different people facing a crisis, but familiar characters, places, and hints of something supernatural carry from one story to the next.

Maddison is not a place where danger arrives with a warning. It hides in wooded cabins, inherited farms, abandoned properties, local legends, and memories people would rather leave alone. The books combine crime, psychological suspense, ghosts, and horror touches, with ordinary people forced to decide what they will do when safety disappears.

The town keeps its secrets close.

Marked by Darkness opens the series with former detective Maribeth Johansen. Two years after her family was killed by the serial murderer she once hunted, Maribeth lives alone in the woods. Then another woman is found dead, marked in a way that points back to the killer who was supposed to be gone. Her story sets the pattern for the series: grief and trauma are real, but so are the unsettling signs that the past may not be finished.

The next books widen the view. In Inheriting Elyse, a grieving family moves to an inherited farm that is filled with boxes, toys, and dolls. Their fresh start turns frightening as the house reveals the presence they have brought into their lives. Cage of Invisible Bars shifts to Nellie, a woman whose isolated life with Jack and their daughter, Aster, begins to crack when she finds evidence that the story she has been told may be a lie.

Thirteen Doors brings together Paige, who has been held captive in a mansion, and Tessa, a detective returning to work after personal loss. In Jars of Things, Sheriff Kingsley, Tessa, Ian, and characters from earlier books confront a new threat tied to a terrible old crime on the edge of town. It works as a meeting point for the people and fears that have been building across the series.

These books are linked more by setting, recurring supporting characters, and an underlying darkness than by one single lead detective. That makes them feel a little like stories told around the same troubled town. Readers can follow an individual book's main plot, but reading in order gives the strongest sense of how Maddison's history keeps reaching into the present.

Expect a heavier mood than a cozy mystery. The stories deal with loss, captivity, abusive control, murder, and fear, while keeping the focus on survivors trying to find a way forward. Supernatural details are important, but human choices are often the most dangerous part.

Begin with Marked by Darkness for the clearest introduction to Maddison and Sheriff Kingsley. Continue with Inheriting Elyse, Cage of Invisible Bars, Thirteen Doors, and Jars of Things to see the town's separate nightmares begin to connect.
