Author bio

Ryan Rimmel is an American fantasy and LitRPG author best known for the Noobtown series, where a sarcastic mayor and his demon companion turn a deadly starter zone into something like home.

He writes the kind of game flavored fantasy he used to look for as a reader and gamer, packed with stats, sarcasm, and lots of table-talk energy.

Outside of writing he works as a product specialist for a telehealth company, helping support the medical robots that hospitals use every day. When he is off the clock, he has played through just about every edition of Dungeons and Dragons, along with a stack of tabletop and computer RPGs.

That love of crunchy rules and running campaigns is what pushed him toward telling stories of his own. After years as a devoted reader and player, he decided to try writing a LitRPG novel, and the result was The Mayor of Noobtown in 2019.

The Mayor of Noobtown opens with Jim dying on Earth and waking up in Ordinal, a world that runs on experience points, character sheets, and lethal beginner zones. Bound to a snarky shoulder demon he names Shart, Jim claims an abandoned village called Windfall and slowly turns it into a functioning town while fighting goblins, wolves, and worse. Readers were drawn to the mix of town building, detailed game systems, and nonstop banter between Jim and his demon.

As the Noobtown books continue, the series grows from scrappy village management into a full saga about armies, Dark Overlords, and the politics of running a magical territory. Titles like Dungeons and Noobs, Noob Game Plus, Tower of the Noobs, and The War of the Noobs push Jim from local problem solving into world shaping decisions, all without losing the rude jokes and stat crunching that fans expect.

Rimmel has since branched out into several other series. With Boe Hagen he co writes Chronicles of Sir Crabby, which follows a beach crab granted intelligence and access to a System as he joins an undersea war against corruption in the world of Arthos. He also pens Fifth Era Apocalypse, where five longtime gamers roll a mysterious die, land in a fantasy world, and end up battling the Necrolord across adventures like One Bad Roll and The Tap Dancing Tarasque. More recently, The Adventures of Squire Yorick launches a new isekai LitRPG about a young man, a magical sword called Justice, and a kingdom in peril.

He even loops back to his own in world jokes with Jim the Curious Puppy, a children’s story set in Ordinal that finally shows the beloved picture book often referenced inside the main Noobtown novels.

Across all of these stories a few things stay constant. Rimmel likes heroes who start ordinary, lean hard on game mechanics, and then claw their way up by paying attention to systems, exploiting loopholes, and building communities around them. He now splits his time between the telehealth job, rolling real dice at game nights, and talking with readers online as he drafts the next chapter of Jim, Sir Crabby, Yorick, or a brand new noob.
