Series background & context

Roverpowered is Drew Hayes in a softer, brighter fantasy mode. It follows Wanda, an aspiring alchemist, and Wumble, her faithful one-eyed hound, as they bond as wizard and familiar and begin a new life in magic.

Wumble is a very good dog. Also, possibly a world-shaking problem.

The first book sets up the heart of the series. Wanda wants to learn alchemy and build a future, but she begins with very little training, money, or security. Wumble gives her companionship and courage. He also carries a strange power that other forces in the world are eager to find. Wanda may think of him as her loyal hound first, but the wider world has reasons to see him as something far more dangerous.

The series is progression fantasy, which means growth is part of the fun. Wanda learns spells, potions, ingredients, and the rules of wizard life step by step. She earns certifications, joins classes, hunts dangerous occorites, works with teams, and slowly becomes more capable. Wumble grows too, though not always in ways anyone around them understands.

The setting keeps the stakes approachable without making them weightless. There are guilds, festivals, strange creatures, underground dangers, chasm vents, and factions interested in power. There are also lessons, small victories, practical problems, and the steady bond between a young alchemist and the dog she loves.

That bond is the reason the series works. Wanda's ambitions matter, but her loyalty to Wumble gives the story its shape. Wumble can be overwhelming in the right moment, yet he remains a dog in the emotional ways that count. He protects, trusts, and occasionally makes life harder by being exactly what he is.

Start with Roverpowered, then continue in numbered order. It is one of Hayes's easier entry points if you want something shorter, lighter, and suitable for a wider age range than his raunchier horror-comedy work or denser superhero novels.
