Series background & context
Ronan Carver is built for the road. He is a former Navy SEAL who has served, loved, lost, and avenged the death of the woman he loved. When his own series begins, he is wandering the country and looking for a reason to keep moving.
He finds one fast.
In The Hunting Fields, Carver discovers Naomi Downes hiding in the trunk of his car. She works for a U.S. senator and claims to have evidence of deadly corruption. That one discovery turns Carver from drifting veteran into hunted man, with police, private security, and mercenaries closing in.
The series leans into action thriller territory. Carver is not solving cozy puzzles. He is walking into places where powerful people have guns, money, and secrets to protect. In The Testing Grounds, a small Michigan town is threatened by a corporation and a dangerous substance that affects the mind. In The Hurricane Trails, hurricane cleanup in a Florida community uncovers cash that very dangerous people want back. In The Savage Desert, Carver is sent to New Mexico to find a missing CIA analyst and stumbles into a threat with much wider stakes.
What keeps Carver readable is that he is not just a weapon. He helps people who are cornered. He has military skills, but the books also make use of his restlessness, grief, and blunt sense of right and wrong. He tends to arrive in places as an outsider, then quickly becomes the only person standing between ordinary people and something much larger than them.
Start with The Hunting Fields. The later books can be read for their individual missions, but the first one gives Carver his solo-series shape: a man without a home, a target on his back, and a habit of doing the right thing even when it makes everything worse.
