In The Savage Desert, Carver is sent to New Mexico to find a missing CIA analyst and stumbles into a threat with much wider stakes.

What keeps Carver readable is that he is not just a weapon. He helps people who are cornered. He has military skills, but the books also make use of his restlessness, grief, and blunt sense of right and wrong.
