Series background & context
The Jo Pullinger series is built around one sharp, strange hook: FBI Agent Jo Pullinger has a serial killer’s heart beating inside her chest. She has survived a transplant, moved to Seattle, and is trying to build a new life. The cases do not make that easy.
Jo is capable, direct, and often more willing to trust her instincts than the people around her. In A Killer's Heart, she arrives in Seattle and faces a family murder where the obvious suspect may not be guilty. The case introduces her to Seattle PD Detective Bryan Ford, whose partnership and conflicts with Jo become a major part of the series.
The books are FBI thrillers with strong procedural bones. Jo investigates murders, disappearances, kidnappings, bomb threats, cult-like groups, vigilante killings, and crimes that look simple until the evidence starts pointing in too many directions. The Seattle setting gives the early books a stable home base, but Fincham also sends Jo into Oregon, Idaho, remote islands, psychiatric clinics, and isolated vacation spots.
The personal thread matters. Jo’s transplant is not just a gimmick. It hangs over the way she sees herself and how others see her. Bryan Ford’s shift from detective to private investigator also changes the shape of later books, letting the series move between official FBI cases and messier outside investigations.
There is a lot of forward motion here. A Killer's Mind and A Killer's Soul deepen the team dynamic. A Killer's Shadow makes Jo the target. A Killer's Storm, A Killer's Moon, and A Killer's Mercy show how quickly a case can become a survival problem. Later entries, including A Killer's Night and A Killer's Escape, make the danger more personal and more tangled.
Start with A Killer's Heart. The cases can often stand on their own, but Jo’s relationships, injuries, fears, and enemies build from book to book.
