Series background & context

The Rogues of the Sea books are where Katharine Ashe's larger connected world really opens up. The basic promise is excellent: powerful noblemen with a secret mission, ships and smugglers, disguises and hidden loyalties, and women smart enough to blow every careful plan apart. If you like your Regency romance with salt water and trouble, this is the series.

Swept Away by a Kiss sets the tone fast. Steven Ashford is hunting a criminal network while disguised as a French priest, and Lady Valerie Monroe ends up imprisoned with him when pirates take the ship. That mix of danger, attraction, and secret identity runs through the whole series. A Lady's Wish offers a quieter second-chance interlude, but even there the spark comes from one perfect day that never stopped mattering.

The later novels widen the adventure. Captured by a Rogue Lord gives Serena Carlyle an earl who is also a pirate, plus smugglers, seduction, and a heroine determined to do some rescuing of her own. In the Arms of a Marquess brings in old desire and a clandestine problem that forces Octavia Pierce back into the orbit of Ben Doreé, now a powerful marquess with unfinished feelings.

These books like movement. Ships, coastlines, country houses, hidden meetings, and sudden reversals all help create the pace. But the series is not just swashbuckling decoration. The secret mission linking these men matters because it tests loyalty. Again and again, characters have to choose between duty, reputation, revenge, and the one person who makes those choices much harder.

Love is the mission they never planned for.

This is also the series to read if you want the roots of some later Falcon Club connections, since a few characters and threads lead forward from here. Still, each romance stands on its own. What you can count on every time is a mix of strong heroines, honorable men with complicated methods, and plots that move from intimate longing to full adventure without losing balance.
