Author bio
Katharine Ashe was born in Philadelphia and grew up there, the kind of kid who loved stories before she knew where they might lead. In third grade she wanted to be a veterinarian and spent her spare time walking a friend's dog. That same year she wrote a sequel to Pretzel, Margret Rey's dachshund classic. By high school she was filling yellow legal pads with tales of horses, beaches, and summer crushes.
She started young, and she kept going.
At Duke University she earned her bachelor's degree and thought seriously about teaching. Around that time she drafted another novel, this one about a young English teacher and a soccer coach. Writing stayed with her even as academic life took over. Years later, while finishing a PhD in history and supposedly taking notes in the Vatican Library, she found herself slipping romance scenes into her laptop instead.
That was the turn. Ashe has said that somewhere between the archives and those secret pages, she understood that romance was the form she had to write. She loved the emotion, the adventure, and the way a love story could carry big questions about identity, power, family, and freedom without losing momentum.
For years she balanced fiction with an academic career. She taught history and popular culture at Duke University, including courses on the history of the romance fiction industry and on history and religion in film and fiction. She also co-founded Duke's UNSUITABLE Speakers Series, which brought women, history, and popular fiction into the same conversation. That background shows in her novels, which tend to feel lived-in rather than merely dressed up in period clothes.
Her books move easily from drawing rooms to ships at sea to lonely roads in Scotland. Swept Away by a Kiss begins with pirates and a hero disguised as a French priest. How to Be a Proper Lady pairs a rule-breaking heroine with a man who has spent years searching for her. The Duke turns a Highland recluse into the center of a slow-burning second-chance romance. In The Prince, a woman disguises herself to study surgery in Edinburgh, while I Loved a Rogue follows a proper heroine pulled back toward first love and buried family truths.
Secret identities turn up a lot.
So do smart women who want more than society plans for them, men burdened by old loyalties, and plots that mix romance with mystery or danger. Readers who click with Ashe usually like that blend, the sweep of the settings, the emotional intensity, and the fact that her couples rarely get an easy road. She is a USA Today bestselling author, How to Be a Proper Lady, The Duke, and The Prince were named among Amazon's best books of the year, and she has been a finalist for major romance awards.
In recent years Ashe stepped away from academia to return her full attention to fiction. In essays and notes she has mentioned her husband, her son, and the ordinary pieces of life that sit beside the work, like sending her son to school and walking the dog while a book is still alive in her head. It fits her work. Her novels are big on feeling, but they stay close to human details.
