Author bio

Roger Lea MacBride was born in New Rochelle, New York, on August 6, 1929, and grew up in a family close to publishing. His father, Burt MacBride, was an editor, and that connection brought Roger into the orbit of Rose Wilder Lane while he was still a teenager. Lane, the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder, became one of the key people in his life. He listened to her stories, absorbed her political ideas, and carried that influence for decades.

He started out in law, not children's fiction.

After Princeton and Harvard Law School, he joined White & Case in New York City. Later he left large-firm life, opened a smaller practice in Vermont, and served one term in the Vermont House of Representatives. He wrote early nonfiction about constitutional questions, including The American Electoral College, and he never really separated writing, politics, and public argument.

His political life was unusually public. In 1972, while living in Virginia, he was chosen as a Republican elector but cast his vote for the Libertarian ticket of John Hospers and Tonie Nathan instead. That vote made Nathan the first woman to receive an electoral vote in American history. Four years later MacBride became the Libertarian Party's presidential nominee, and his campaign book A New Dawn for America laid out the ideas he cared about most.

Still, the reason most readers know him now is Little House.

Lane called him her adopted grandson and named him her executor and heir. After her death in 1968, MacBride became the steward of the Wilder literary estate. He brought Laura's unpublished The First Four Years into print, edited West from Home, and helped move Little House on the Prairie into television. In other words, he did not just inherit a beloved literary world, he helped shape the way later generations met it.

His own fiction came later. Beginning with Little House on Rocky Ridge in 1993, he wrote the Rose books that follow Laura and Almanzo Wilder's daughter from childhood in Missouri into early adulthood. Little Farm in the Ozarks, In the Land of the Big Red Apple, On the Banks of the Bayou, and Bachelor Girl show Rose growing from a farm child into a young woman who wants work, movement, and a life of her own. Readers who enjoy these books often like their everyday frontier detail, family routines, and the way Rose feels a little more restless than Laura.

He also wrote Rose Wilder Lane Her Story, a fictionalized account of Rose's early adult years. That book makes sense beside the Rose novels, because MacBride was drawn to characters who push against limits, whether those limits were political, personal, or simply the boundaries of a small town. Even in his gentler historical fiction, questions of independence keep surfacing.

In later years he returned to the Republican Party and chaired the Republican Liberty Caucus. He died at his home in Miami Beach, Florida, on March 5, 1995. By then he had lived several distinct lives, lawyer, political activist, editor, producer, and children's author, and that mix is part of what makes his career so unusual.

Maybe that is the best way to think about him. MacBride was not a writer who followed a straight line from school to desk to bookshelf. He arrived at children's fiction after law, politics, and a long apprenticeship to someone else's family story. That late turn gives his books their own flavor. They are interested in work, weather, money, self-reliance, and the stubborn hope that a new place can become home.
