The Heirs of Locksley

by Carrie Vaughn

2020

At the coronation of young Henry III, Robin Hood's children find a lonely king, a dangerous plot, and more trouble than they expected. It is a brisk historical adventure full of escapes, loyalty, and family nerve.

Series background & context

Carrie Vaughn's Robin Hood stories begin after the part most retellings treat as the ending. Robin of Locksley and Marian are older now. Prince John is king. There has been victory, marriage, family, and some uneasy peace, but peace in medieval England does not stay simple for long. That is what gives these novellas their charm. They are not retelling the famous outlaw beats. They are asking what comes after.

The answer is children, politics, and trouble.

The real focus of the series is the next generation, especially Robin and Marian's children. Mary carries the weight of the family legend most directly. John has warmth, nerve, and a habit of stepping into danger because helping someone seems obviously right. Eleanor, quiet and observant, sees more than the adults sometimes expect. Vaughn writes them as children of famous parents, but not as copies. They each bring their own strengths, and that keeps the books from feeling like reheated myth.

Sherwood still matters, of course. So do old allies, old enemies, and the lingering idea that the forest remembers things. There is a touch of ghost story here, but this is not horror. It is historical fantasy adventure, quick-moving and family-centered, with enough texture from the period to make the stakes feel real. King John, the crown, rebellious nobles, and later the uncertainty around young Henry III all matter because the Locksleys are no longer outside the system looking in. They are tangled up in it.

That change is the point.

Robin Hood is often about resisting unjust power from the margins. These stories are more interested in what happens when the rebel has a household to protect and obligations he cannot simply laugh off. Robin and Marian are still themselves, but now they are parents as much as legends. The children inherit the story of Sherwood, yes, but they also inherit compromises, unfinished fights, and a country that is still unstable.

The tone is brisk and inviting. Vaughn does not try to turn the legend grim for the sake of seeming serious. Instead, she keeps the adventure moving and lets the emotional pull come from loyalty, family, and the awkward business of growing into a legacy. There are rescues, escapes, contests, hidden plots, and the occasional brush with the uncanny. There is also a steady interest in what courage looks like when you are still young and people keep measuring you against heroes.

If you like Robin Hood but want something a little sideways from the usual origin story, these books are a smart place to go.
