Series background & context

Road to Babylon picks up after the world-shaking events of the Purge of Babylon books. The ghouls are no longer in full control, but that does not mean life is safe again. The old world is gone, the new one is fragile, and human greed has survived every bit as well as the monsters did.

Peace is relative.

The series centers heavily on Keo, one of Sisavath's most durable and dangerous survivors. He would very much like a quieter life, but the world keeps refusing to give him one. As the books go on, other familiar faces matter just as much, especially Lara, Gaby, and the people trying to hold together something better in the aftermath. Small towns, improvised strongholds, Black Tide, and the open Texas landscape all become part of a new map shaped by violence, memory, and unfinished wars.

What carries the series from book to book is the sense that winning once was never going to be enough. Raiders, collaborator towns, blue-eyed ghouls, and old grudges keep dragging the survivors back into conflict. Some books play like chase stories. Others are siege stories, rescue stories, or revenge stories. The larger thread is always the same: can decent people build anything lasting in a world that still rewards brutality?

That makes Road to Babylon feel a little different from the earlier books, even though it shares the same universe. The Purge of Babylon is about collapse. Road to Babylon is about what comes after, and why that part can be just as hard. The monsters are still around, but now the human power struggles matter just as much.

Expect a lot of action, a lot of close calls, and characters who keep getting tested long after they should have run out of strength. If you already know the earlier Babylon books, this series feels like coming back to old friends in a harsher, more complicated world. If you are mostly here for Keo, this is where he really takes over the stage.
